The city at your feet

Any medieval city worth its salt has a castle overlooking it from upon high. Burgos is no exception and currently its historic fortress has been transformed into an exceptional vantage point for enjoying the best views around. Moreover, if we depart from the modern pilgrim hostel, a lift and two escalators will spare us from the worst of the gradient. After passing the Centre of Contemporary Art and the church of San Esteban, a shaded stairway through a thick tree-lined canopy leads us to the entrance to the fortress and the castle lookout (“Mirador”). If inside the first we can explore the underground passages of the medieval well, from the second are enjoyed a series of priceless views.

It’s worth stopping a while to enjoy the best views of the city and the surrounding landscape. At first you notice the Cathedral and the Iglesia de San Esteban; then, in the distance, you can make out the almost-always snow-capped peaks of the Sierra de la Demanda, where the River Arlanzón has its sources.

The hours of sunset are usually the most popular, but if you really want to experience something unforgettable then you must come to Burgos on a day of snow. To avoid problems on the roads, the best thing to do is take a train or coach – Burgos is very well-connected – and enjoy a city whose famous wintry climate has provided an effective advertising slogan: “Burgos won’t leave you cold”. The panoramic view of its cathedral from the heights of the castle lookout with the city covered in a white blanket is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To warm up, what better than roast suckling lamb or a comforting broth or stew in one of its most typical restaurants?
